From Guernica 2 Garza, artist statement – mewe, 2024

mewe responds to the continuity of genocides which have been ceaseless throughout world history From Guernica to Gaza. Linking historical events with his observations of the ominous trends in 2024. Pointing towards global catastrophe, the war raging in Gaza and the increasing risk of nuclear escalation. mewe’s new works explore paradoxical imagery and the Orwellian concept of ‘double-speak’ as a political tool of ‘Big Brother’ from the novel 1984. Utilising the interplay of humorous absurdities and profound truths. The humour and absurdity of mewe’s ‘double-images’ lightens the mood as he unpacks current world events, and the systemic barriers faced by people with disability.

GO RED FOR DYSLEXIA
October is International  Dyslexia awareness month

I’m happy the way God made me. I’m happy to fight for disability rights. Invisible disabilities are hard, people can’t see them. There is zero understanding. The system closes its eyes and ears to invisible disabilities like Dyslexia race and gender are irrelevant. Dyslexia is a permanent disability. It’s completely debilitating, every day of your life.  The more government companies and corporations say “just go to our website”  or “drop us an email”. The more inaccessible many public services become. It’s not just me that can’t access these services, it’s many people for whom literacy is a barrier to access and equity. Not all of us live in the digital world. It’s making it harder for dyslexic people and people living with other cognitive disabilities. The banks, universities and government agencies all do this to save money. They say to “do it online”, well that cuts me and many others off. I want to go face to face to get things done. Dyslexia is a recognised disability in Australia. Yet the NDIS provides nothing for Dyslexic people. Even if you have a SPELD assessment saying that you are dyslexic, there is no support. Why not? It’s hard when you go to the doctors or anywhere and people say “just fill this in”. Trying to get help with legal stuff is near impossible. No lawyers are going to transcribe what you say unless you pay them an arm and a leg. People don’t have that kind of money. People who live with Dyslexia have gone through a rotten education system that does not offer additional support for Dyslexic children. I know I’m still struggling at 63 years of age, and fighting for my two young children to get the support they need at school.

Go red for dyslexia.
